Bear in the Forks of a Tree (Ne-sou-a-quoit)

Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785-1859) served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs 1824-1830.  In that capacity he commissioned and collected portraits of Native Americans for his Gallery in the War Department.  Most of the portraits were taken by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington D.C. during visits of Native delegations but other artists are represented including James Otto Lewis.

McKenney's goal was to publish a record of vanishing peoples - portraits, biographical sketches and a history of North American Indians.  He accomplished this in the first issue History of the Indian Tribes of North America, published in three volumes 1838-1844.  James Hall (1793-1868) provided the text.

McKenney & Hall's History of the Indian Tribes of North America: The First Issue is a three cd-rom publication containing all 120 images and text (3 vol.) from the edition published 1838-1844, as well as one image prepared but not included, and four additional images from the quarto edition of 1848-1850, for a total of 125 images at 5 resolutions (750 images).

The copies included in this publication are those in the Archives & Rare Books Department of the University of Cincinnati.
