Notes: Twinleaf is one of only two species of the genus named in honor of Thomas Jefferson. First named by Linnaeus, the plant was rechristened by the American botanist Benjamin Smith Barton to honor the American statesman. The name recalls the distinctive deeply parted leaves. It is a plant of the eastern woodland and found throughout Virginia. Meriwether Lewis quite correctly called Jefferson "the author of our enterprise", and it seems only reasonable and just to include a plant associated with him in an exhibit of plants associated with the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
