ADOBE ACROBAT READER CONFIGURATION

Adobe Acrobat Reader, Version 5 or higher, is required for this web site. (Click here for Acrobat Reader.)

It's a good idea to start Adobe Acrobat Reader separately from your browser and check your configuration (you need only do this once). Windows users select 'Edit' and then 'Preferences'. Mac users select 'Acrobat' and then 'Preferences.' Please enable all options shown below.

Version 5:
'Options' category:
Under 'Web Browser Options':
  • Display PDF in Browser (*)
  • Check Browser Settings When Starting Acrobat
  • Allow Fast Web View (*)
  • Allow Background Downloading (*)
Under 'Miscellaneous':
  • Use Page Cache
  • Use Logical Page Numbers(*)
  • Allow File Open Actions and Launching File Attachments
  • Open Cross-Document Links in Same Window
Version 6:
'Internet' category:
Under 'Internet Options' set your 'Connection Speed' as appropriate.
   Under 'Web Browser Options':
  • Display PDF in browser (*)
  • Check browser settings when starting Reader
  • Allow fast web view(*)
  • Allow speculative downloading in the background(*)
'Search' category:
  • Enable fast find
'Page Display' category:
  • Use logical page numbers (*)
'Startup' category:
  • Use Page Cache
'General' category:
  • Open cross-document links in same window
  • Save As optimizes for Fast Web View.
'Trust Manager' category:
  • Allow documents to open other files and launch other applications.

All of the above choices make a difference for this web site, but those configuration options marked with an asterisk (*) are especially important. In particular, if 'Display PDF in Browser' is not selected, links intended to go to a specific page within the Journal may instead default to the first page, and 'fast web viewing' will not be in effect. You may want to review many of the other choices in the Acrobat Preferences menu to set per your preferences.

Connection Speed: The journal pdfs are big files. Adobe Acrobat provides 'Fast Web View' which supports 'page at a time' web browsing, but the large files will still be difficult if users have dial-up or slow connections. Therefore this site queries the user for their connection speed, and for users with slower speeds, directs those users to the journal in more parts. Users are also encouraged to download the pdf files for offline viewing. Simply right-click on the link and choose 'Save Target As.'
