On the upriver journey, Catlin stopped only briefly at Fort Clark and the Mandan Villages before continuing on to Fort Union.

In 1832, Fort Union at the mouth of the Yellowstone River was the terminus of navigation and the showplace of the American Fur Company. It was presided over by the chief of the Upper Missouri Outfit, Kenneth McKenzie, a redoubtable Scotsman also known as "The King of the Missouri."
