At Fort Pierre, Catlin was busy painting visiting native dignitaries and making notes of their customs. Among the first he so honored was One Horn (Miniconjou), who, according to Catlin’s glowing description, was a man of singular achievements and stature among the Lakota. The display of One Horn’s portrait among his people caused a sensation. Catlin became known as "The Medicine Painter."
