Catlin participated in buffalo hunts during his stay at Fort Union, and executed numerous sketches and studies of the beast, both at rest and under attack. He painted the hunt on horseback, the surround, hunts in winter, buffalo wallows, the rut, buffalo crossing the river, and buffalo under attack by white wolves. Catlin was the first to paint such a variety of images of the buffalo and wildlife hunting for the American public.
