Fort Union was located on the north side of the Missouri River about six miles above the mouth of the Yellowstone and was designated for trade with the Assiniboin and neighboring tribes. At the time of Catlin’s arrival, large numbers of Blackfeet, Crow, Assiniboin and Cree were encamped about the fort.
